This 2011 Harley-Davidson® FLSTF Fat Boy build by Rollies Speed Shop shows what happens when classic Softail style gets a serious performance overhaul. Built in-house at Rollies Speed Shop in Brisbane, this Fat Boy was upgraded with S&S Cycle power, a D&D Low Cat 2-into-1 exhaust, Performance Machine Heathen wheels, Progressive 422 rear suspension, and Performance Machine Phat Bars.

The goal was to keep the soul of the bike, but give it more power, sharper handling, stronger road presence, and a tougher overall stance. If you’re looking for ideas for your own Harley-Davidson Fat Boy, Softail, or custom V-Twin build, this project is a great example of how the right mix of engine, exhaust, wheels, suspension, and controls can completely transform a motorcycle.

Rollies Speed Shop 2011 Harley-Davidson® FLSTF Fat Boy Build.

Some bikes get passed down with a story. This 2011 Harley-Davidson® Fat Boy came from father to son, along with a vision to honour its legacy whilst adding modern performance. Built in-house at Rollies Speed Shop in Brisbane, this Softail represents the meeting point of old-school chopper swagger and thoroughly contemporary engineering: big S&S power, Performance Machine Wheels, and suspension you’d trust through any corner in Queensland or beyond.

The owner’s brief was clear: turn heads at a standstill, then smoke them when the light goes green. No compromises. No half measures. Every part on this bike was chosen to deliver on that promise, and to prove a Fat Boy doesn’t have to ride like one.

Here’s how we built it.

Stage 6 Performance Kit

Before anything else, this build needed muscle. The S&S Cycle Stage 6 Performance Kit transformed the 2011 Twin Cam® 96 into something entirely different, a motor that announces itself the moment you press the starter, holds strong through the entire rev range, and gives you every reason to keep the throttle pinned.

Stage 6 is S&S’s flagship bolt-in big-bore kit: forged pistons, matched cylinders, precision-machined heads, and camshafts engineered to work as a system. It’s the difference between claiming your bike is fast and having the low-end torque and top-end pull to back it up. It’s a complete engine transformation that demands respect, rewards commitment, and forms the foundation every other performance part builds on.

Anything less would’ve left performance on the table.

A professional dyno tune is essential after fitting Stage 6, not optional, just standard practice to extract the full gain and protect your investment.

Low Cat 2-into-1 Exhaust – Black

Once the motor was sorted, the exhaust had to match. The D&D Low Cat 2-into-1 in black delivers the deep, authoritative note a Stage 6 motor deserves, without the rasp, without the drone, without the headache on long runs.

The Low Cat routing keeps mass low and tucked, which matters when you’re chasing stance and handling. It’s a true 2-into-1 collector system, so you get scavenging benefits and real power gains, not just noise. The black ceramic finish that holds its colour through heat cycles and the Australian sun.

Result: sharper throttle response, cleaner lines, and a sound that turns heads two blocks before you arrive. That’s the difference between an exhaust and an *exhaust system*: one makes noise, the other makes power you can feel through the seat and pegs.

21in. x 3.50 in. Wide Heathen Wheel – Black Anodised

The stance transformation started here. Performance Machine’s 21-inch Heathen front wheel replaced the stock 16-inch factory roller, and turned this Fat Boy from cruiser-traditional to show-floor aggressive in an afternoon.

A 21-inch front wheel changes everything. It lifts the bike, extends your sight line over the bars, and plants a visual exclamation point at the front of the chassis. Heathen’s spoke design is bold without being busy, with deeply machined spoke faces, a black anodised finish that stays true, and Performance Machine’s race-derived hub engineering underneath.

This wasn’t just an aesthetic call. The taller front wheel pairs with extended forks to reposition the riding triangle, bars back, seat up, front wheel forward, creating a laid-back, feet-forward stance that looks chopper-aggressive but rides modern-comfortable. You sit *in* this bike, not *on* it, and the Heathen wheel is where that geometry starts.

Performance Machine wheels are CNC-machined in the USA from forged aluminium billet (Hubs are purchased separately to match your specific brake and axle configuration). This build used the appropriate 2011 FLSTF hub to maintain ABS function and direct bolt-on fitment.

18in. x 5.50 in. Wide Heathen Wheel – Black Anodised

The rear Heathen wheel matches the front in design language, same black anodised finish, same Performance Machine precision. At 18 inches tall and 5.50 inches wide, this wheel gives the Fat Boy a planted, muscular rear stance that balances the extended front without looking stretched or disproportionate.

Fat rear rubber is non-negotiable on a bike pushing Stage 6 power. The wider Heathen rear wheel accommodates modern sport-touring rubber that grips hard, wears predictably, and lets you lean this Softail further than any stock Fat Boy owner would believe. Matched front-to-rear, the Heathen set transforms the profile; this bike photographs like a custom, rides like a performance cruiser.

Like the front, the rear Heathen is a forged, CNC-machined Performance Machine wheel, engineered in Southern California, distributed exclusively in Australia and New Zealand through Rollies Speed Shop. Hub purchased separately for precise fitment to the 2011 Softail rear brake and drive configuration.

422 Series Heavy Duty Rear Shock Absorbers

Big power and aggressive stance mean nothing if the suspension can’t keep the chassis composed. Progressive 422 Series shocks with remote-adjustable preload were spec’d to handle the extra power this build demanded.

These shocks have heavy-duty rate springs wrapped around gas-charged shock bodies, engineered to control a loaded Softail through aggressive cornering and highway-speed stability. The remote preload adjuster is positioned below the seat, down on the left side of the frame, accessible without tools, so you can dial in ride height and compliance for solo riding, two-up touring, or spirited runs through the hinterland.

The 422 Series replaces the stock Softail shocks that were never designed for Stage 6 power. Result: a bike that feels planted at speed, stable under braking, and confident through corners.

Performance Machine's Phat Bar Kit

The riding position is where stance meets function. Performance Machine’s Phat Bar Kit brought the bars back toward the rider, matching the extended front forks and elevated seat to create a relaxed, feet-forward, arms-slightly-bent riding triangle.

It’s the Goldilocks position for a performance cruiser: enough pullback to lean into corners without strain, enough rise to keep your wrists neutral on long highway runs, enough width to give you leverage when the road tightens up.

Combined with the step-up seat, the Phat Bar Kit transforms how you *occupy* the bike. You sit centered and feel like you’re commanding the bike rather than perched on top of it. That’s the difference between a seat-bar-peg combo that fights you and one that disappears into muscle memory.

The Result, Show Stance, Go-Fast Power!

This Fat Boy walks the line between museum piece and weapon, and somehow manages to live on both sides at once, proof that “passed down from Dad” doesn’t mean “kept stock.” Legacy bikes earn their keep by being ridden hard, often, and with no apologies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Generally, 21-inch front wheels require extended forks, compatible brake calipers, and often a narrower front tyre to clear the factory fender. On the 2011 FLSTF in this build, the Heathen 21-inch wheel worked with the extended fork setup and maintained ABS function using the correct Performance Machine hub. Not all Softails have the same clearances, check with Rollies or your installer before ordering.

Performance Machine wheels are forged and CNC-machined, so they’re typically lighter than stock cast wheels — which improves unsprung weight, steering feel, and acceleration. Exact weight savings depend on the specific hub and wheel size. Contact Rollies on (07) 3252-5381 for confirmed weights if you’re building to a target.

The 422 Series bolts directly to the stock Softail shock mounts using standard hand tools. The remote preload adjusters are pre-installed and routed under the seat, no fabrication, no special equipment. Any competent workshop can fit them in under an hour. Preload adjustment after installation is tool-free via the knurled adjuster knob.

You can, it’ll run. But you’ll leave power on the table, risk running lean in certain throttle positions, and won’t get the full benefit of the system. A 2-into-1 exhaust like the Low Cat changes exhaust flow significantly vs stock, which means the fuel map needs adjustment. On a bike already running a Stage 6 motor, a dyno tune isn’t optional; it’s mandatory to keep the engine safe and realise the gains you’ve paid for.
