When Rollies Speed Shop set out to build this 2024 Low Rider S, the goal wasn’t just big numbers on a dyno chart. It was proving what a stock 117ci Softail could become when you bolt on a Trask Tornado Turbo Kit, and whether the result would still be a bike you’d actually want to ride every day.
The answer: an incredibly smooth 153 horsepower and 143 foot-pounds of torque that stays docile when you are cruising, then comes alive the moment you roll it on.
This build started with the Trask Performance Tornado Turbo Kit, gained nearly 40hp immediately, then went further with the S&S 496 Cam Chest Kit to unlock the full potential of that forced air. Every other part, seat, bars, risers, gauge relocation, was chosen to support the riding position and comfort this much power demands.
This is what a properly executed turbo Softail looks like.

The Trask Tornado Turbo Kit is where this build begins, and for good reason. This isn’t a cheap universal turbo system adapted to fit. It’s a purpose-designed kit for 2018-2024 Softail and 2017-2023 Touring models running oil-cooled 107, 114, or 117 engines, built around Garrett internals with Trask’s own compressor and turbine housings. The kit includes everything you need for a complete bolt-on installation: mandrel-bent TIG-welded stainless steel pipes with an integrated wastegate, race-inspired heat shields, a Trask plenum with integrated blow-off valve, 2-bar MAP sensor, larger injectors, spark plugs, boost gauge with mount, oil feed and drain lines with a custom cam cover, and all necessary hardware and gaskets.
On this 2024 Low Rider S with its factory 117, the Tornado Turbo Kit delivered nearly 40hp over stock, turning a capable cruiser into something that punches well above its displacement class. The beauty of this system is how it delivers that power: smooth, progressive, entirely usable. There’s no violent lunge when boost comes on, no hunting for traction. It builds pressure cleanly and holds it through the rev range, which is exactly what you want on a street-ridden Softail.
Rollies and Trask also strongly recommend a vented top cover and upgrading the stock plastic throttle body manifold to a 55mm alloy unit, small insurance policies that protect a serious investment.
Once the Trask turbo proved its worth, Rollies took this build to the next level with the S&S 496 Cam Chest Kit, the complete internal package designed to support 120+ horsepower. This isn’t just a camshaft swap. It’s a complete matched system: the HPT496 chain-drive camshaft, an upgraded oil pump and cam plate machined from billet aluminium, hard anodised black tappet cuffs, and Quickee pushrods with black pushrod tubes.
The billet oil pump is where serious builders pay attention. It delivers 44 per cent more flow capacity on the feed side and 58 per cent more on scavenge, critical when you’re asking a turbocharged engine to make serious power reliably.
The 496 camshaft itself is engineered to move the air a turbocharged 117 can now flow. Paired with the Trask kit, this combination pushed the Low Rider S to 153hp and 143 foot-pounds to the wheel of smooth, tractable, entirely rideable power. The result is a bike that idles aggressively, cruises without drama, then delivers astonishing acceleration when you ask for it. (See Dyno Chart Below For More Info)
Note: S&S cam chest kits require a professional dyno tune to realise full gains and protect the engine; it’s standard practice with any serious cam or forced induction work.
When you’re putting 153hp through the rear tyre, you want a seat that lets you settle into the bike and hold on properly. The LePera TailWhip Dual Seat does exactly that. It’s LePera’s Kickflip profile taken one step further: a low, sculpted dual seat with moulded Marathon Foam with gun-metal grey diamond stitching. The highly detailed powder-coated steel base is carpeted underneath to protect the paint, and the whole assembly mounts to the stock location on 2018-up Sport Glide, Low Rider and 2020-up Low Rider S models without modification.
The TailWhip sits you back slightly compared to stock, gives you something to brace against when you crack the throttle. It’s made in the USA by LePera, family-owned since 1972 and still building every seat to order in California. That means consistent quality, proper materials, for a seat that will last the life of the bike.
The Low Rider S already has a decent bar position from the factory, but adding 6.5in Thrashin Pull-Back Risers transforms it into a bike you can ride aggressively. These risers are machined from American 6061 aluminium, hard anodised black with an anti-fade agent, and feature 1.5 in of pull-back to bring the bars closer to the rider. The top clamps are angled at 35 degrees for a clean, purposeful look, and they accept any standard 1in handlebar.
Thrashin includes ARP top hardware in every pair, proper fasteners that won’t walk loose under vibration. The base holes are tapped for standard half-inch bolts (not included, so you reuse your stock hardware). They’re made in the USA, which means tight tolerances and consistent finish quality.
On a turbo Softail, bar position matters. You need to be able to weight the front end through corners and brace yourself when you accelerate hard out of them. These risers put you in exactly the right position to do both without cramping your wrists or shoulders on a long ride. That’s the difference between a bike you enjoy riding and one you tolerate.
When you fit taller risers, the stock gauge cluster mounting point no longer makes sense. The Thrashin Gauge Housing Relocation Kit solves that cleanly. It’s machined from billet 6061 aluminium, hard anodised black, and backed with carbon fibre. It relocates the stock 2022-up Low Rider S speedo to a position that makes visual sense with the new bar height, right where you’d naturally glance down without breaking your sight line.
It’s a small detail, but it’s the kind of detail that makes a clean build look intentional instead of cobbled together. Made in the USA, fits perfectly, works exactly as intended.
The finished 2024 Low Rider S is exactly what Rollies set out to build: a 153-horsepower turbocharged Softail that’s smooth, tractable, and entirely rideable on Australian roads. The Trask Tornado Turbo Kit delivered the foundation of forced induction that builds boost cleanly and holds it through the rev range without drama. The S&S 496 Cam Chest Kit unlocked the full potential of that boosted air with the camshaft profile, upgraded oil pump, and precision internals needed to make serious power reliably. Every supporting mod was chosen to give the rider the comfort and control this much performance demands: the LePera seat, the Thrashin risers and gauge relocation, and the Arlen Ness bars.
This isn’t a bike you trailer to events. It’s a street machine that idles calmly in traffic, cruises comfortably on the highway, then comes alive the moment you roll the throttle on. The power delivery is progressive and predictable, exactly what you need when you’re around 50 per cent more horsepower than a standard 117. The riding position is aggressive enough to feel in control, comfortable enough to live with on a long ride. And the whole package looks purposeful without resorting to graphics kits or bolt-on nonsense.

Fitting a turbo kit changes how the engine is loaded, so Harley-Davidson® can decline a warranty claim where the modification contributed to the failure. It does not automatically cancel the whole warranty. Talk to your selling dealer before the work starts, and keep the invoice and the dyno tune sheet. Rollies can put you in touch with a workshop that documents the job properly.
It can be, provided the tune and the supporting parts are right. This 2024 Low Rider S was built to be ridden, not trailered. It idles calmly in traffic and cruises without drama, then delivers the power when asked. The S&S billet oil pump flows 44 per cent more on the feed side and 58 per cent more on the scavenge, which is what keeps a boosted engine alive.
Yes. The Tornado Turbo Kit is designed for 2018 to 2024 Softail models and 2017 to 2023 Touring models running the oil-cooled 107, 114 or 117 engine, so a 2024 Low Rider S with the factory 117 is covered. It is a complete bolt-on kit with pipes, plenum, injectors, sensor, gauge and all hardware.
That depends on your height and how far you ride. This build uses the LePera TailWhip, a low dual seat with moulded Marathon Foam and a carpeted steel base that mounts in the standard location on Sport Glide and Low Rider models from 2018 and Low Rider S from 2020. It sits you back slightly, which helps under hard acceleration.
Harley-Davidson® quotes 103 horsepower and 125 foot-pounds to the wheel for a standard 2024 Low Rider S. The Trask Tornado Turbo Kit added close to 40 horsepower on its own. With the S&S 496 Cam Chest Kit as well, this build makes 153 horsepower and 143 foot-pounds to the wheel.
A big bore kit adds capacity and delivers its power in a linear, predictable way. A turbo leaves the bottom end standard and makes power with boost, which is why the Trask kit adds close to 40 horsepower as a bolt-on. On this build, the turbo came first, then the S&S 496 cam chest released the rest of it.
Yes. The Trask kit supplies larger injectors and a 2-bar MAP sensor, but the engine still needs a professional dyno tune to set fuelling and timing under boost. S&S also requires a dyno tune with the 496 cam chest kit to realise the full gains and protect the engine. Budget for tuning as part of the build, not as an extra afterwards.
Both share the Softail chassis and the Milwaukee-Eight® 117. The Low Rider ST adds the frame-mounted fairing and saddlebags for touring, while the Low Rider S keeps the stripped-back club-style look with the small headlight fairing. Most performance and cockpit parts in this build suit both.
Rollies and Trask both recommend a vented top cover and replacing the standard plastic throttle body manifold with a 55mm alloy unit. Both are small insurance policies that protect a serious investment once the engine is running boost. The kit itself includes the larger injectors, 2-bar MAP sensor, spark plugs, oil feed and drain lines, and a custom cam cover.
The 2024 and 2025 Low Rider S share the Milwaukee-Eight® 117 and the Softail chassis, so the riding experience is close. For a turbo build, the year matters: the Tornado Turbo Kit in this article covers Softail models to 2024, while 2025 and later need the Trask Stage 2 kit. Check the year before you order.
The turbo alone added close to 40 horsepower, but the standard cam chest limits how much air a boosted 117 can move. The S&S 496 kit pairs the HPT496 chain drive camshaft with a billet oil pump and cam plate, hard anodised tappet cuffs and Quickee pushrods. It supports 120 horsepower and above, and this build took it to 153.
If the risers are tall enough to put the bars in front of the standard gauge, yes. The Thrashin Supply gauge housing relocation kit moves the standard 2022 and later Low Rider S speedo so it sits correctly with the new bar height, and you can read it without breaking your sight line. With 6.5 in risers, it is worth fitting at the same time.
