Fuel Injectors For Harley-Davidson® Motorcycles

Choosing the right Fuel Injectors for Harley-Davidson® motorcycles is one of those jobs that sounds simple, but can make a huge difference to how your bike starts, idles, tunes, and performs on the road.

If you’re building an M8 or Twin Cam®, it’s easy to get caught up in cams, cylinders, heads, exhausts, and horsepower numbers. But your injectors need to match the engine build properly. Go too small and the engine can run out of fuel up top. Go too big and the bike can become rough, jerky, hard to tune, and unpleasant at low speeds.

The key is choosing an injector that supports your horsepower goal while still giving clean, accurate fuel delivery at idle and normal riding RPM.

In this guide, we’ll walk through injector sizing, duty cycle, common M8 and Twin Cam upgrade points, and why quality spray pattern and injector control matter when you want your Harley-Davidson engine build to run clean, strong, and reliable.

Fuel Injectors For Your Harley-Davidson® - Don't Over-Inject Your Engine

When you’re building a high-performance V-Twin, it’s easy to focus on the big-ticket parts. Cubic inches, cam lift, head flow, compression, exhaust, all the exciting stuff. But there’s one small part that plays a massive role in how well your engine actually performs: the fuel injector.

Your injector is basically the gatekeeper for your fuel supply. Choose the wrong one, and it won’t just cost you horsepower. It can make the bike harder to tune, rougher to ride, and less enjoyable in everyday conditions. At Rollies Speed Shop, we often see engine builds that suffer from one simple mistake: Over-Injecting (Bigger is not always Better)

So, let’s keep it simple and walk through what you really need to know when choosing Fuel Injectors for your M8 or Twin Cam® engine upgrade.

The Goldilocks Rule for Fuel Injectors... "Not Too Small, Not Too Big!"

In the performance world, there’s a common idea that bigger is always better. With Fuel Injectors For Harley-Davidson®, that’s not always the case.

What you really want is an injector that’s big enough to support your target horsepower. But still small and precise enough to behave properly at idle, low RPM, and normal street riding.

If you fit massive injectors to a mild build, the ECU can struggle to control them accurately at idle. The injector only needs to open for a very short amount of time, and that’s where things can get messy. This is known as the minimum pulse width.

When the injector is too large for the build, it can become inconsistent at low RPM. That’s when you start getting that annoying herky-jerky throttle feel in traffic, poor fuel economy, rough idle, and a bike that just doesn’t feel clean or crisp to ride.

In other words, the right injector is not the biggest one you can buy. It’s the one that’s ideal for the size/power of your engine.

Understanding Duty Cycle

A good way to know whether your injectors are reaching their limit is by looking at the Duty Cycle. Duty Cycle is the percentage of time the Fuel Injector is open while the engine is running.

You might hear automotive tuners say you should never go past 80% duty cycle. That’s a common rule in the car world, but V-Twin engines are a little different. On Fuel Injectors for Harley-Davidson® V-Twin builds, it’s not unusual to safely run injectors up into the low 90% range when everything is set up correctly.

One warning sign that your injectors are running out of fuel is when the dyno graph starts looking messy or “squiggly” up top. If power starts falling off erratically above 5,500 RPM, there’s a good chance the injectors are pegged and can’t keep up with what the engine is asking for.

That’s when it’s time to step up to higher Performance Injectors. (But don’t go too Big)

Sizing Fuel Injectors For Your Harley-Davidson® Engine Build

Milwaukee-Eight® Models

Early M8 models commonly came with 4.38 g/s injectors. Once you start pushing past the 115 horsepower mark, an injector upgrade is usually worth considering.

Later-model M8s with 5.5 g/s injectors are much more capable from the factory. In many cases, they can support around 140–150 horsepower on pump fuel, depending on the full engine combination and tune.

For bigger 128″ or 131″ builds aiming toward 160+ horsepower, you’ll usually be looking at 6.24g/s or 7.09g/s injectors or larger. Again, it all comes back to matching the injector to the engine, not just fitting the biggest option available.

Twin Cam® Models

Many cable-throttle Twin Cam models came factory-fitted with smaller 3.91 g/s injectors.

For a typical Stage II or Stage III build, moving up to a 4.9 or 5.3 g/s injector is generally a great sweet spot. It gives the engine the extra fuel it needs without going so large that the bike becomes difficult to tune & unpleasant to ride at low speeds.

The Rollies Advantage: Quality Matters

At Rollies Speed Shop, we don’t just stock any Fuel Injectors for Harley-Davidson® Motorcycles. Spray pattern matters. Flow accuracy matters. Consistency matters.

A poor spray pattern means the fuel doesn’t atomise properly. Instead of turning into a fine mist, the fuel can enter the intake in a less efficient way. This can lead to wasted fuel, loss of power, poor throttle response, and a harder-to-tune engine.  The last thing we want is to see your engine build robbed of power by a low-quality injector.  To ensure you unlock the maximum power from your engine upgrades, these are the brands we use in our workshop… Tried, Tested and Proven to Perform.

Contact Rollies for Expert Advice

Don’t let your fuel system become an afterthought. A good engine build needs the right amount of air, the right amount of fuel, and the right tune to bring it all together. If your injectors are too small, the engine can run out of fuel. If they’re too big, the bike can become rough and unpleasant to ride.

The goal is simple: give the engine exactly what it needs. No more, and definitely no less. If you’re planning a build, the team at Rollies Speed Shop can help you work backwards from your target horsepower and choose the injector size that suits your setup.

Whether you’re after the premium engineering of Feuling Parts or the proven performance of our Rollies range, we have injector options in stock to help your engine run clean, strong, and reliable.
