Perry Sands started out by putting lawn mower motors into mini-bike frames for fun.
The desire to innovate and build grew and his first job was working as a machinist. this gave him new skills and the money to buy his first Indian® Chief Motorcycle. In his parents garage he created a one of a kind Indian Chopper that became known as “The Puffer”.
The Puffer launched Perry Sands into the Chopper scene which then led to him starting his own company named Performance Machine.
Unfortunately The Puffer was wiped out at 80mph and was salvaged for parts. Gone for almost 50 years the original Indian® frame resurfaced and Perry Sands along with his son Roland Sands seized the opportunity to rebuild it. This is their story…
The 1946 Indian Chief was customized by Perry Sands in 1968… 52 years later in 2020 “The Puffer” is brought back to life again.
This is something special, father & son rebuilding the original bike using as many original parts as they could source. Calling in some favors from old friends they managed to get most of the 1946 Indian Motorcycle® parts they needed.
Kickstarting it looks like a solid workout but it must bring back a flood of good memories cruising down the road on his first Indian Chopper. The chopper that helped launch his career and gave us two great after-market brands, Performance Machine® & Roland Sands Designs®. This chopper is special for so many reasons.
Now that it’s been rebuilt, hopefully it will stay in the family or maybe “The Puffer” can be added to a museum colection for future generations to appreciate.
