Best Seats for the Harley-Davidson® Softail®

The short answer

Which Seat Should You Choose For Your Harley-Davidson® Softail®?

Match the seat to how you actually ride, not to the brand name. Saddlemen is Australia’s most popular seat brand and its GelCore foam is built for long days. LePera is handcrafted in California for durability and finish. San Diego Customs Pro Gripper adds grip for hard riding, Thrashin Supply Co pairs its styling with a supportive two-up, Kodlin USA offers a short premium range, Drag Specialties covers broad fitment at a modest price, and SlyFox Performance suits performance builds.

Find the Right Seat for YOUR Softail®

Your stock seat works fine until it doesn’t. You get around the two-hour mark on a weekend ride, and you start shifting more than you’d like. By hour three, every bump registers higher on the discomfort scale than it should. That’s when most riders start looking at aftermarket seats for their Softail.

Rollies Speed Shop is the distributor for seven brands across Australia and New Zealand, each offering distinctly different approaches to solving the same problem: keeping you comfortable and in control for as long as you’re willing to ride. This isn’t a contest to crown a winner; it’s a breakdown of what each brand brings to the table, why the differences matter, and how to match the right seat to the way you actually use your bike.

Why Upgrade The Seat On Your Softail®?

The stock seat on your Harley-Davidson® Softail was engineered to meet a price point and fit the widest possible range of riders, which means it truly fits almost none of them.

An aftermarket seat addresses three things stock often gets wrong: Pressure Distribution, Riding Position, and Long-Distance Support. Pressure distribution determines whether you’re sitting on muscle or bone after 300 kilometres. Riding position affects how much weight loads through your lower back, wrists, and tailbone. Long-distance support is what keeps you from counting down the kilometres to the next fuel stop.

Different seat designs prioritise different outcomes. A touring seat optimised for long highway runs will feel like overkill on a 40-minute commute. A minimalist solo seat that looks sharp on a Softail won’t do you any favours on a run down to the Victorian High Country. That’s why the brand matters less than the match.

LePera Seats: Handcrafted Quality From California, USA (Est. 1972)

LePera builds every seat by hand in California, and that craftsmanship standard shows in the details: double-stitched seams that won’t pull apart, hand-cut covers with no bunching or wrinkles, and foam shaped individually for each model application.

LePera offers a great range of seats for softail models, including Kickflip (high wall step-up), Tailwhip (raised back edge 2-up), Bare Bones (solo & matching pillion pads), Silhouette (solo & Dual 2-up), Maverick (standard & daddy long legs), and Daytona (sport/dual).  The foam is dual-density, firm at the base for support, softer at the surface for comfort, and the covers are genuine leather or marine-grade vinyl that weathers Australian conditions without cracking.

The brand’s reputation is built on longevity. LePera Seats hold their shape and appearance after years of use, while cheaper alternatives sag and fade. You’re paying more upfront, but you’re also buying the last seat your bike will need.

Best for: Riders who want handcrafted quality, proven durability, and a seat that still looks and feels right after 50,000 kilometres.

Saddlemen Seats: Comfort-First Engineering, Massive Range

Saddlemen has been building motorcycle seats in the US since 1987, and the brand’s reputation rests entirely on one measurable outcome: comfort over distance. If you’re doing big miles regularly, Saddlemen shows up in more rider recommendations than any other brand for good reason.

The core technology across most Saddlemen Seats is a proprietary foam called GelCore, which combines progressive-density foam with a gel insert positioned at the base. The gel doesn’t compress the way foam does, so it redistributes pressure across a wider surface area instead of concentrating it in two painful points. On a 500-kilometre day, that difference becomes obvious around the halfway mark.

Fitment and style coverage is comprehensive: solo and two-up, low-profile and stepped, touring and sport. The range distributed through Rollies covers enough variations that you’re selecting based on riding style and position preference.

Best for: Riders who spend serious hours in the saddle and want a seat that’s engineered specifically for long-distance comfort. If your regular rides run into triple-digit kilometre counts, Saddlemen’s GelCore foam delivers measurable fatigue reduction compared to stock or basic aftermarket options.

Drag Specialties Seats: Broad Fitment, Fresh to the Australian Market

This is the new kid on the block in Australia.  They have comprehensive coverage across the Softail platform. You’ll find solo seats, two-up configurations, low-profile options for shorter riders, and larger designs for all-day comfort.

The seats are constructed with moulded foam over a thermoformed ABS base pan, with vinyl or synthetic leather covers depending on the model.

SlyFox Performance: Purpose-Built for Performance Builds

SlyFox Performance is solving a completely different problem. These seats are built for riders who stunt, race, or build performance-focused bikes where weight, rider position, and control matter more than all-day comfort.

SlyFox Seats are minimalist by necessity. Thinner foam, lighter materials, aggressive seating positions that put weight forward and lock the rider in place during hard braking or aggressive cornering. If you’re building a stunt bike or a stripped-down performance Softail, SlyFox offers seat options you won’t find in the mainstream catalogues.

Durability is high; these seats are built to survive repeated impacts, slide-outs, and hard use. If you’re building a bike for tight technical riding, it’s the only choice in the Rollies range.

Best for: Stunt riders, performance builders, and anyone constructing a bike where the seat is a functional component of rider positioning and control, not a comfort accessory. If your build priorities include reducing weight and improving weight distribution, SlyFox makes seats designed around those exact requirements.

Kodlin USA: Premium Built Seats For Softails

Kodlin USA operates at the opposite end of the spectrum. The range distributed through Rollies is smaller but highly curated; these aren’t mass-market seats; they’re engineered for specific applications with zero compromise on materials or construction quality.

Where Kodlin differs is in the details most riders don’t see until they’re holding the seat in their hands. Heavier-gauge steel base pans. Multi-density foam layering that separates surface comfort from structural support underneath. Marine-grade upholstery with double and triple stitching at high-stress points. Kodlin seats are built like they’re meant to outlast the bike they’re bolted to.

Best for: Riders who want the best-built seat they can bolt on and don’t need 47 style variations to choose from. If you’re keeping the bike long-term and you value quality of construction over breadth of choice.

Softail® Seats: Frequently Asked Questions

The questions Australian and New Zealand riders ask us most often before they order a seat.

Are all Harley-Davidson® Softail® seats interchangeable?

No, and this is the single most common mistake we see. Harley-Davidson® completely redesigned the Softail® frame for 2018, so a seat built for a 1984 to 2017 Softail® will not fit a 2018-up bike, and the reverse is also true. Even within the 2018-up range the mounting points and tank cutouts differ between model families, which is why a Street Bob seat and a Breakout seat are separate part numbers. Always buy to the fitment listed on the product, and if your bike sits near a changeover year, call us and we will confirm it before you order.

Which seats fit my Softail® model?

The brands on this page cover the current Softail® range between them, including Street Bob, Softail® Standard, Softail® Slim, Sport Glide, Low Rider, Low Rider S, Low Rider ST, Fat Bob, Fat Boy, Breakout, Heritage Classic and Softail® Deluxe. Coverage is not identical across brands, so a seat you like on one model may not exist for another. Each product listing states the exact models and years it fits. Tell us your model and year and we will tell you which of these brands actually build for it.

Which Softail® seat is the most comfortable for long-distance riding?

Comfort over distance comes down to how the seat spreads your weight, not how soft it feels in the showroom. Saddlemen builds specifically around this problem: its GelCore foam puts a gel insert at the base of a progressive-density foam, so pressure is spread across a wider area instead of concentrating in two points. LePera dual-density foam takes a different route to the same goal, firm at the base for support and softer at the surface. LePera seats also have a great reputation for long-ride comfort. A wider, flatter seat with a supportive back edge will nearly always beat a thin, low-profile one on a long day, whichever brand builds it.

Is a gel seat better than foam, and what is GelCore?

Gel and foam do different jobs, so it is not a straight contest. Foam supports you and rebounds. Gel does not compress the way foam does, so it resists bottoming out and spreads load rather than absorbing it. GelCore is Saddlemen’s approach: rather than a gel pad sitting on top where it would add height and heat, the gel insert sits at the base of a progressive-density foam, so you get the foam feel with the pressure distribution of gel. For short rides you will not notice much difference. Past the two-hour mark you will.

Will an aftermarket seat lower my seat height?

Often yes, and it is one of the most common reasons riders change a seat. A low-profile or bucket-style seat removes foam under the rider and drops the seating position, which can make a real difference to reaching the ground. How much it drops depends entirely on the seat and the model, so we will not quote a figure that will not match your bike. Tell us your model, your inseam and whether you want to keep two-up capability, and we will point you at the options in the range that actually sit lowest.

Saddlemen or LePera: how do I choose between them?

They are built to different briefs, so pick on what you want rather than which is better. Saddlemen is comfort-first engineering with the widest fitment and style range, and it is the seat most riders doing big regular kilometres end up on. LePera is handcrafted in California with hand-cut covers and individually shaped foam, and it is chosen by riders who want that finish and build quality and expect the seat to still look right years in. If distance comfort is the deciding factor, start with Saddlemen. If craftsmanship and longevity are, start with LePera. Both are carried in depth, so ride style and the look you want should decide it.

Which Softail® seat is best for two-up riding with a passenger?

Look for a genuine dual seat with a defined step and a supportive back edge, rather than a solo seat with a pillion pad added. The step stops you sliding back under acceleration and gives your passenger a proper platform instead of a perch on the fender. Saddlemen Step-Up and Explorer, LePera Tailwhip and Kickflip, and the Thrashin x Saddlemen Step-Up are all built around this. The Thrashin seats in particular use a slimmer nose to give you more legroom and easier footing while keeping the backrest support for the kilometres.

Do new motorcycle seats need to be broken in?

Yes, most do. A new seat is firmer than it will be at 1,000 kilometres, because the foam has not yet taken your shape or settled to your weight. Riders regularly judge a seat on the first hour and get it wrong. Give a new seat a few decent rides before you form a view. If it is still wrong after that, it is usually the shape or the riding position that does not suit you rather than the foam, and that is a different seat rather than more time.

Do I need extra brackets or parts to fit an aftermarket Softail® seat?

Usually not. Seats built for your model and year use the factory mounting points, the standard front tab and the rear seat bolt, so it is a direct swap. Two things to check before you order: whether you are keeping a sissy bar, backrest or luggage rack, because some seats change how those sit, and whether the seat you want is a solo, in which case you may need a separate pillion pad and its own mounting hardware. If you are running accessories on the rear, tell us what they are when you call.

Can I fit a Softail® seat myself, or does it need a workshop?

A direct-fit seat is one of the easiest jobs on the bike. On most Softail® models it is a single rear bolt, lift the old seat off the front tab, slide the new one on and refit the bolt, and it takes minutes with basic tools. Take care not to overtighten the rear bolt and make sure the front tab is properly located before you ride. If you are also fitting a backrest, a pillion pad or a rack, that is when it is worth handing it to a workshop.

Are aftermarket Softail® seats worth the money?

The stock seat was engineered to a price point and to fit the widest possible range of riders, which means it suits very few of them well. An aftermarket seat is bought to fix a specific problem: pressure after a couple of hours, a riding position that loads your lower back, a reach to the ground that is not working, or a look you want. If none of those apply to you, the stock seat is fine. If one of them does, it is the single change that most affects how long you are willing to stay on the bike.

Where can I buy these seats in Australia and New Zealand?

Rollies Speed Shop is the Australian and New Zealand distributor for all seven brands on this page, and we supply them through our authorised dealer and workshop network rather than selling direct. Find your nearest dealer at our dealer locator, or call us on (07) 3252-5381, Mon to Fri 8am to 5pm and Sat 8am to 12pm, and we will tell you exactly which seats are in stock for your model.

What year did the Softail® frame change, and which seat years are interchangeable?

The big one is 2018, when Harley-Davidson® redesigned the Softail® frame completely. What catches riders out is that there were changes before that too, and our own fitment bands follow them: 1984 to 1999, 2000 to 2007, and 2006 to 2017. A seat listed for a 1984 to 1999 Softail® will not fit a 2000-up bike, and from 2000 onwards the rear tyre width matters as much as the year, which is why two bikes of the same model year can take different seats. Riders on the forums often say seats swap freely across the early 2000s and then get caught out from 2006, which is roughly where the bands sit. Rather than work off a compatibility chart, give us your model, your year and your rear tyre size and we will confirm the exact seat before you order.

What does "130 or 150 rear tyre" or "200 rear tyre" mean on the fitment?

On any Softail® from 2000 onwards the seat has to match the rear tyre, not just the year, because a wider tyre needs a wider rear fender and the back of the seat sits over it. Our listings split into 130 or 150 OEM rear tyre, and 200 OEM rear tyre. Elsewhere you will see the narrower one called a standard tyre model. To tell which you have, read the rear tyre sidewall: the first three digits are the width in millimetres, so a 200/55R17 is a 200. One catch worth knowing is that the sidewall tells you about the tyre currently fitted, not necessarily what the bike left the factory with, so if the wheel or tyre has ever been changed, call us with your VIN and we will check it properly. This is the most common reason a pre-2018 seat order has to come back.

Why will a Softail® seat not fit my Softail® Deuce?

Because the Deuce carries a longer fuel tank than any other Softail® of its era, so the seat that fits around it is shorter, and a standard Softail® seat will not sit correctly. Deuce owners have a saying about this, that everything fits except a Deuce, and on seats it is close to true. What it does not mean is that nothing is available. LePera builds both the Bare Bones solo and the Silhouette dual in a Softail® Deuce 2000 to 2007 fitment, and we carry both. It is a short list rather than a long one, so if you ride a Deuce, call us on (07) 3252-5381 rather than ordering from a general Softail® listing, and we will tell you what genuinely fits.

Will a Softail® seat fit my Fat Boy?

Yes, provided it is a Softail® seat in the right band for your year and your rear tyre. The Fat Boy is usually not a fitment of its own, it sits inside the wider Softail® bands, which is why you will often not see its name on the listing at all. From 2007 the Fat Boy runs the wide 200 rear tyre, so it takes seats listed for Softail® 2006 to 2017 with a 200 OEM rear tyre. Earlier Fat Boys fall into the narrower bands instead. Saddlemen, LePera and Drag Specialties all build for the 200 band, so there is genuine choice there. The one thing not to do is buy a seat listed for Softail® 1984 to 1999 and expect it to fit a later Fat Boy, because it will not.

Can I fit a Touring seat, or a seat from another Harley-Davidson® model, to my Softail®?

No. Softail® seats fit Softails, and a Touring, Dyna or Sportster seat will not mount to a Softail® frame, because the pan shape, the front tongue and the rear mounting are all different. This one usually comes up because a rider wants better support for a passenger and has sat on a touring seat that felt kinder. The answer to that is a proper two-up Softail® seat rather than a seat from another family. A genuine dual seat with a defined step and a supportive back edge does the same job and actually fits the bike. Tell us how much of your riding is two-up and how far you go, and we will point you at the ones built for it. You can also browse the era directly: Softail dual seats 1984-2017 and Softail solo seats 1984-2017.
